Life Partners Holdings is the original life-insurance settlement company. In 1997, it began acting as a broker between policy holders who didn't want to (or couldn't) continue paying their premiums and investors interested in buying their policies. Its strategy: Targeting potential clients who hold high face value policies and charging buyers an average of 17-19% in fees, according to Morningstar analyst Drew Woodbury.

That has assured that revenues from each policy continue to rise, writes Woodbury, even as the number of new settlements has declined in the current fiscal year. Life Partners Holdings' profits rose 56% in the last two fiscal years.
