Samsung and Apple have been embroiled in a series of lawsuits since April, when Apple first accused Samsung of copying key elements of its iPhone and iPad devices. Phones are a critical market to Samsung, which sold 280 million mobile devices during 2010, a 23% increase from 2009. Indeed, Samsung's telecom arm was one of the few that made a profit in the first part of 2011. The company continues to deal with the aftermath of the devastating earthquake in Japan, greater uncertainty surrounding the cost of raw materials, and slow PC sales. --S.D.
