Indeed, it's becoming increasingly difficult to tell the difference between Sinopec (which is also known as China Petroleum and Chemical Corp.) and major multinational oil and gas companies. But unlike Sinopec's multinational competition, the Chinese national oil company is more vulnerable to fluctuations in oil price margins because of pressure from the Chinese government to not raise domestic energy prices. That hurdle aside, Sinopec is growing at a rapid clip and it continues to form partnerships with national and multinational oil companies worldwide. In 2010, the company signed on to nine new projects overseas, which include Canadian oil sands development, offshore oil projects in Brazil, and the construction of a new polypropylene plant in Kazakhstan. --S.D.
