Why it's admired
Coca-Cola is still a classic. The world's largest beverage-maker remains one of the world's most recognized brands; its drinks are consumed nearly 1.6 billion times a day. Still, like almost every company facing the recession, Coke has lost some fizz. U.S. sales fell in the fourth quarter, dropping 2.8% to $7.13 billion after restructuring costs and writedowns. But earnings still beat expectations, thanks to continued international growth and a smooth CEO transition from Neville Isdell to Muhtar Kent last year. -L.D.
