AARP Foundation Applauds Denny's and Chase Card Services' Participation in Senior Hunger Awareness Month Campaign
WASHINGTON, April 27, 2016 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- AARP Foundation today applauded Denny's and Chase Card Services for their successful participation in the inaugural Senior Hunger Awareness Month, launched in February by AARP and AARP Foundation. As part of the campaign to generate awareness about the critical issue of senior hunger, AARP and AARP Foundation featured "29 Days of Action" recommendations, tools and resources for the public to educate them about this issue and encourage them to take action. "Too many seniors are going hungry," said Lisa Marsh Ryerson, president of AARP Foundation. "This campaign was critical to bring the issue of senior hunger to the forefront of people's minds and encourage them to get more involved. We are deeply grateful for the participation of Denny's and Chase through its AARP® Credit Card from Chase program. They have been instrumental in helping us get the word out about the many ways each and every one of us can make a difference during Senior Hunger Awareness Month – and throughout the year." As part of the "29 Days of Action," Denny's and Chase, both longstanding partners of AARP, showed their support for the program by making donations to AARP Foundation. Chase participated through its AARP Credit Card from Chase program. Denny's restaurants nationwide garnered more than one million transactions via an in-store donation drive with AARP members – for every AARP membership card shown throughout the month of February, Denny's made a 25 cent donation to AARP Foundation. Denny's also has a longstanding partnership with No Kid Hungry and each year holds annual fundraising efforts to help raise money and awareness for the fight against childhood hunger. "As America's Diner, Denny's has strong ties to the people and communities it serves," said Denny's Chief Executive Officer John Miller. "We're incredibly committed to helping end hunger in our communities and are proud to support efforts – both in our longstanding partnership with No Kid Hungry and Drive to End Hunger – which help serve kids and seniors throughout the country. With our $250,000 donation to AARP Foundation, we hope to help make a difference to senior hunger, one meal at a time." "Chase and the AARP Credit Card have been part of AARP Foundation's hunger work for more than five years, and in February Chase donated $100,000 to AARP Foundation's Drive to End Hunger," said Richard Quigley, president of Chase partner cards. "Together we can accomplish so much, which is why Chase is continuing its commitment to donate up to $1.1 million to AARP Foundation in 2016. Every time someone uses their AARP Credit Card to dine out, Chase donates 10 cents to help the Foundation fight senior hunger." AARP Foundation views hunger as a health issue. Every day many older adults skip a meal so they can pay the rent, keep their lights on, or feed their family. Research shows that this food insecurity contributes to chronic medical conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, and depression. The relationship between hunger and health can easily become a vicious cycle, as low-income seniors have to spend more on their health care, have even fewer financial resources to spend on food, and may become socially isolated. As a critical step, AARP Foundation is bringing together nonprofit, government and corporate stakeholders in the food and health sectors to design and implement solutions to combat food insecurity and hunger.
