Toys "R" Us recalls crayon boxes for lead paint

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Toys "R" Us and the Consumer Product Safety Commission on Thursday recalled 27,000 crayon and paint box sets because the printed ink on the outer packaging of the wood cases contains lead.

Moreover, the CPSC said some of the black watercolor paint in the set contains excessive levels of lead, which violates the federal lead paint standard.

The "Imaginarium" box sets were sold at Toys "R" Us stores and on the retailer's Website from Oct. 2006 through Aug. 2007.

The recall involves the "Imaginarium" brand 213 Piece Wooden Coloring Case which includes crayons, pastels, colored pencils, fiber pens, paintbrush, pencil, water colors, palette, white paint, ruler and pencil sharpener in a light tan wooden carrying case that measures about 14 inches by 19 inches.

The product, manufactured in China, was sold at Toys "R" Us stores nationwide and on toysrus.com from October 2006 through August 2007, priced at about $20.

The CPSC said that no injuries were reported but advised that consumers should stop using the product immediately and take the products away from children and return the item to the nearest Toys "R" Us store for store credit.

This is the latest in a series of toys and other products made in China that have been recalled over safety concerns.

Earlier this month, Mattel (Charts, Fortune 500) recalled more than 9 million of its toys that were made in China because they pose lead poisoning and choking risks to children.

In June, RC2 Corp. recalled 1.5 million "Thomas & Friends" wooden railway toys that were also made in China over concerns that the surface paints on the toys contained lead, which could result in toxic poisoning in young children.
