Safest cars

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety added 11 more models to its "Top Safety Pick" list. That means they earned the best possible ratings front, side and rear impact protection and they are available with electronic stability control.

The Volvo S80 looks even better inside than it does outside. It also offers a host of safety features besides, of course, top-ranked impact protection.

Buyers can get a blind spot detection system that lets you know immediately - with a glowing light on the side mirror - if the way is clear to change lanes. Also, an alarm sound and blinking red light bar reflected in the windshield can warn you of an impending frontal collision while you still have time to react.

For the truly paranoid, the S80 offers a key fob that can warn you of an intruder hiding in your locked car.
