In-car jukebox for the 21st century

The six-disc CD changer is already looking like an antique as cars are coming equipped with better ways to carry your record collection on board.

Plugging in your iPod
iPod connectors, like this one in the Scion xD, allow drivers to listen to music and control the player using the car's own audio controls.
Plugging in your iPod
Pros: Allows full control of the player using the car's stereo controls
Cons: Only works with an Apple iPod

Unlike the general purpose audio input jack, iPod-specific connectors allow an Apple iPod - but only an iPod - to be fully controlled using the car's stereo controls. The iPod device itself can be left tucked away untouched. That's much easier than trying to operate an MP3 player while driving.

BMW was first with an in-car iPod port, but other car companies, including Toyota's low-cost Scion division, now offer true iPod compatibility.

That's what most car buyers say they want, according to Mark McCready, director of market analysis for on-line auto retailer CarsDirect.com, instead of a plug that leaves them fiddling with an MP3 player as they drive.
