T-Mobile tried to steal some of Apple's thunder by releasing the Samsung t409 and the Nokia 6086 two days before the iPhone launch. T-Mobile has reason to be audacious: the Samsung and the Nokia are the first dual mode Wi-Fi phones to be sold by a major US carrier. This allows customers to make voice calls over the Internet when they're near a Wi-Fi hotspot, then seamlessly switch those calls to a cellular network when out of Wi-Fi range.
