Best neighborhoods to retire

If life after work means more than a beach chair, the best place to retire might be the big city. We looked at 30 of the nation's largest metro areas and found the right neighborhoods for you.

Dallas
Best place to retire: Arts District
Pros: Culture, luxury, and a great view.
Cons: Expensive, and despite the light rail, this is still a driving town.
Real estate: Expect to pay at least $500,000 at One Arts Plaza. Patio homes across the city start under $200,000.
Everything is big in Texas, including plans for Dallas's new Arts District. Twelve arts organizations already make their homes there, including sculpture and Asian art museums, a symphony orchestra and the Dallas Museum of Art.

The luxury condos at Museum Tower, breaking ground in early 2008, will rise higher than any other residential building. So will their prices: over $1 million, twice as much as One Arts Plaza.

To keep from breaking the bank, you could go for a low-maintenance patio home on Renoir Lane or Cezanne Drive in Preston Forest. With a patio home, people "can just lock the door and walk out," says Gail Williams, a Dallas real estate agent.
