While the designer's tweed suits and quilted handbags remain far beyond the reach of the mainstream shopper, the company has achieved mass hysteria with a single product that is within anyone's grasp. This fall's Tulipe Noire nail polish, a metallic deep red, is drumming up the intense desire that the French fashion firm first ignited with its Vamp nailcolor, which was introduced in 1994 and then again with last year's Black Satin polish. Limited editions of both of the previous polishes sold out so fast that desperate fashionistas flocked to eBay and paid up to $200 for a bottle.
