The Ford Explorer SUV is struggling in the marketplace as buyers switch to car-based crossover SUVs. One solution to that problem - and one that is rumored to be under serious consideration - is making the next Ford Explorer a crossover SUV, too.

At next week's Detroit Auto Show, Ford will be rolling out a tough-looking crossover SUV concept called the Ford Explorer America.

As Ford describes it, the Explorer America would be powered by a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine capable of producing 275 horsepower or a 340horsepower 3.5-liter V6. Both engines would be turbocharged.

The V6 version would weigh 150 pounds less than the current V6 explorer.
