Despite being an off-road-ready machine with a solid rear axle, the Grand Cherokee's on-road performance is actually quite good.
But for those who never venture off-road, the Grand Cherokee's fuel economy is a cause for concern. At this price, there are plenty of crossover SUVs out there that offer more interior space with better fuel economy.
Chrysler Corp. is trying to answer the fuel economy complaint with a card that buys you three years worth of gas at $2.99 a gallon. At today's gas prices, that would save Grand Cherokee buyers about $2,200.
Smart buyers will opt for the $4,500 rebate instead. Unless gas shoots past $5 a gallon very quickly, it'll be the better deal.
