Short for The Whole Earth 'Lectric Link, the Well was a pioneering online community launched in San Francisco by Larry Brilliant, now director of Google.org, and Stewart Brand, founder of the Whole Earth Catalog. The Well quickly developed a counterculture ethos, with Grateful Dead fans flocking to the message boards to find one another.
