In February, Microsoft makes an unsolicited bid to acquire Yahoo! for $44.6 billion. The offer is raised to nearly $50 billion and then withdrawn three months later. The bid is an attempt to join the online advertising race currently being lead by Google. Previously, Microsoft had tried besting AOL via the MSN portal, which debuted in 1995 to coincide with the launch of Windows 95. It offered free e-mail, Web searching and instant messaging and never turned a profit. NEXT: HIT: Video gaming
