The first retail version of Windows is released. By the time Windows 3.0 is launched five years later, it has become a widely popular operating system. Much of its success is attributed the fact that Microsoft cut deals with PC manufacturers to offer Windows on all new computers. The next (hugely successful) version didn't hit the marketplace for another 5 years, when Windows 95 debuted. NEXT: MISS: OS/2
