Doc Lopez's most memorable career move was abandoning his retirement sail around the world to save ICU Medical, which began losing money and sinking into debt after he departed as CEO.

Lopez's outside interests are colorful: He goes spear fishing two to three times a year, often in the South Pacific. Among his entrepreneurial heroes is Ted Turner.

"He painted with a big swash and then he had people come in and fill in the color-by-numbers behind him," Lopez says. "Similarly, I see the big picture and leave the details to the people I surround myself with."
