Diagnostic Devices Inc.
We developed an audible blood glucose meter for blind diabetics and those who have low vision. I relocated here from Miami in 2006 to escape the hurricanes. Not being able to ship freight when we needed to was not an option. I looked at four cities, and Charlotte was the best.
Charlotte is a good point of distribution for us. It's two delivery days away from 80 of the country, and 80 of our business is east of the Mississippi. It's a low-cost area with a great labor pool. We're moving a lot of our manufacturing from Asia to the United States, and we needed skilled, technical labor. We found that here.
All the support services we need -- banking, legal, engineering firms -- are here. We're building an 85,000 square feet factory, and we're being offered tax incentives and site building assistance.
The recession has helped to build our business. We've doubled our revenue from last year. Managed care companies are turning to us, not only because we offer the only blood glucose meter for the blind, but because we're a low-cost provider with high-quality products. Ordering our products saves them money.
I can't think of any cons to doing business in Charlotte. The city has a diversified population, and with my three kids, it's a good place to raise a family. -Dinah Eng
