Hummer and Jeep are more than just competitors, they're blood relatives. In 1971, a year after American Motors bought the Jeep brand, it spun off a separate company called AM General to make Jeeps for government use, like the famous postal Jeep.
AM General later made the High Mobility Multi-Purpose Wheeled Vehicle, or HumVee. That vehicle became famous during its service in the first Iraq war, just as the original Jeep had during World War II.Today, AM General continues to make vehicles for military and other uses, even without Hummer.
