Produced and sold by AM General, the first civilian version of the the Humvee, called the Hummer, was introduced in 1992. It barely fit into a single lane on most roads and was, no surprise, not terribly practical. With a six-figure price tag, the H1, as it was later named, was a symbol of power. H1 drivers, it seemed, really did own the road.
