THINK has been here before. Owned by Ford in the early 90s, it sold a handful of battery-powered cars before the venture was abandoned in 2002. Now after several changes in ownership and a recapitalization, THINK is ready to try again.
Sales begin this fall of the all-electric City, a small two-plus-two with a top speed of 68 mph and a range of up to 99 miles. THINK expects to sell 300 by the end of the year, mostly to fleets. The customer transaction price is expected to be in the low $20,000 range after federal tax credits.
The car is currently being manufactured by Valmet, the same contractor that builds the Fisker Karma, while work continues on THINK's own plant in Elkhart, Ind. Retail sales will begin in a few U.S. markets next year. THINK expects to sell about 2,000 cars in 2011.
