Washington Redskins owner Snyder was still only 37 when he hit #6 on our "40 under 40" list in the September 16, 2002 issue. Back then, the list was strictly based on worth (it's now more based on influence) and Snyder had $664 million--small potatoes compared to his worth today, which is just above the $1 billion mark. The entrepreneur founded a targeted advertising company called Snyder Communications in 1988 and eventually sold it 12 years later for more than $2 billion.
In 2002, we noted that Snyder was "part of a campaign to lure a major-league ball club to Washington, D.C." and told "cash-strapped baseball teams" to take note. That didn't happen -- D.C. eventually got the Nationals, but Snyder wasn't involved. Today, he continues to head up the `Skins, which is considered the second-most valuable franchise in the NFL, behind the Dallas Cowboys.
