National chains have to meet local needs to survive, and census data can help.
For instance, census data helped alert Walgreens to the fact that a particular Chicago suburb has a large segment of Polish-speaking residents. In addition to the 10-year data, Walgreens also looks at the American Community Survey -- a more in-depth census study that asks about employment, income and language preference. That information helped the drugstore giant decide to hire a bilingual pharmacist who's fluent in both English and Polish for that Chicago store location.
"We try to find pharmacists or store staff that speak English and [any] other language that's predominant in a community," said Walgreens spokesman Robert Elfinger. "It makes for a more helpful staff."
