Tom Ganley, an Ohio Republican, spent $7.8 million of his own money to win a seat in the House. He lost, and it cost him $84.25 a vote.
This year most of the big self-funders are Republican, but that's not always the case.
In years past the top self-funders have included healthy dose of Democrats and even independents, said Anne Bauer, a researcher at the National Institute on Money In State Politics.
