The first attempt by parent company Fuji Heavy Industries to develop a performance car, the SVX was a bit too ambitious for Subaru. It cost some $10,000 more than any other Subaru, and its unique glass canopy with split, two-piece power side windows has never been imitated. An SVX won the Alcan race from Seattle to the Arctic Circle and back again, but potential buyers were unmoved. It's estimated Subaru lost $3,000 on each car sold.
