An ungainly attempt to squeeze three rows of seats onto a shorter platform, the Commander was the most angular of all Jeeps, with an upright windshield and squared off sides. It quickly became known as "the box the Grand Cherokee came in." After a big launch, customers got the message. Sales fell steadily, and by the Commander's fourth year of production, they had plunged to one-seventh of their original level.
