On Lake Winnebago, and just 40 miles from Lake Michigan, Neenah has become such a popular spot for boaters and fishermen that it has changed the face of the local economy.
The town's residents used to rely heavily on work in the paper plants and foundries (Kimberly-Clark still has a plant there), but now many residents work in the service industry, finding jobs at local restaurants or shops in historic downtown that cater to both residents and tourists, said Mayor George Scherck.
Outside of town, it's fairly rural. "Drive five minutes in any of three directions and you're in farmland," said Scherck. Yet even though Neenah feels as if it's out of the hustle and bustle of modern-day life, it's less than an hour drive to Green Bay -- making it easy for resident Packers fans to get their tailgating fix come football season.
