Why I did it: When McCaffery was working in PR in San Francisco, she really enjoyed the volunteering she did on the side.
"I felt like I was able to connect with people who were going through a very difficult time," she says. "Working in business was fulfilling in other ways, but it wasn't for me."
How I did it: "My husband and I went back to graduate school at the same time," she says, "and we were pretty broke."
They took on student loans, gave up dinners out. "It was tough for a few years, but I'm very pleased with my decision."
Why I love it: "I really wanted to feel like I'm making a difference. I work part-time now so I have the flexibility to spend time with my kids. It's great to love what you do for a living."
