March 9, 2011, East Granby, Conn.: United Technologies (No. 44), or UTC, puts the heavy in heavy industry. Its six businesses -- Carrier, Otis, Sikorsky, Hamilton Sundstrand, Pratt & Whitney, and UTC Fire & Security -- generated revenue of $54.3 billion last year, selling helicopters, engines, elevators, air conditioning systems, and more to the aerospace and commercial building industries. A solid performer on the Dow 30, UTC had a big year in 2010. It acquired GE Security for $1.8 billion and landed a contract to supply the engines for Airbus's A320neo planes.
