Adrian Gross
Buenos Aires, Argentina
I became a victim of the financial crisis, when I was laid off from my Wall Street job at the beginning of the recession.
I had already had a vacation planned at the time, so I packed up my things and left for Buenos Aires. I had a return ticket booked, but then I decided, I didn't want to go back home.
Finance had left a sour taste in my mouth, so I tried something new. I found a job as the head of marketing at a lifestyle start-up. Our business, Oasis Collections, rents out high-end villas and apartments throughout Argentina, Brazil, Columbia and Uruguay.
I don't have much desire to run back to the United States. Good jobs are hard to come by, and while I wouldn't say the job market in Argentina is all that better, there's a lot more room for creativity. The barriers to entry for start-ups are much lower.
