Research is key for Black Friday shoppers, and Toniann Bergamini did hers. She showed up at Victoria's Secret in Wayne, N.J.'s Willowbrook Mall at midnight, for a deal giving away free tote bags.
"I just went there to get the bag. If you spend $65 you get a bag and lotions. I spent just 50 cents over that," she said.
Next Bergamini browsed at Forever 21, before waiting for H&M to open at 5 a.m.
The goal? To be one of the first 100 customers in line. H&M was giving away scratch-off gift cards worth up to $300.
"I checked out the mall's website for sales before I got here," she said.
Starting Black Friday, two U.S. malls will track guests' movements by monitoring the signals from their cell phones.
