I was told about the adoption benefits when I first came to work here. My husband and I didn't have any children. I had looked into domestic adoption but was told we were too old. Years later, we found out we could adopt a child from Russia.
We found a boy who was 12 who had been passed over because of his age. We adopted him and a few months later went back for an 8-year old girl. I was amazed --there was a generous stipend to defray some of the expenses and a generous adoption leave and on top of that, there is assurance there will be a job when you get back.
During those first frantic months, SAS helped me find childcare. Three years later we discovered that [our] daughter had two older brothers, then 15, and we brought them home, too. Then we discovered there was a sister also who was 8 years old.
There was so much required of us in terms of money, time and paperwork. We had to make four trips to Russia to carry off the adoption. If I had worked somewhere else, I'm sure I would have worried a lot. My coworkers were very kind and very supportive. It's a place where we are expected to balance our responsibilities at home with our responsibilities at work, not the other way around.
