Maris Angolia, president of Karin's Florist, is already planning to hire a lot of workers.
Location: Vienna, Va.
Hiring: Yes.
Even though it's summer, Maris Angolia, president of Karin's Florist, is already working on ramping up her staff levels for the winter holidays.
"We are knee deep in Christmas," said Angolia, adding that the holiday season is Nov. 1 through Dec. 24.
To handle the additional crowds and extra orders, Angolia plans to add 16 to 22 seasonal workers to her full-time staff of 26 people. Those workers include full-time drivers, sales managers, floral arrangers and people to work on an "as-needed basis."
In addition to seasonal hiring, the company plans to bring on two full-time employees: a driver in September and a full-time wedding event coordinator and floral designer.
"We have done a huge marketing effort and as a result, our weddings and events business has grown," said Angolia. "Fortunately for us, D.C. is a little bit recession proof."
Angolia pays close attention to the health of the economy and stays up on the news every day. "When we hire, we want people to be here a long time," she said. "We want this to be their home, we don't want to go out and hire, hire, hire, and then" have to fire them.
