Costa Rica has been a honeymoon hot spot for years because of its white (and black) sand beaches, tropical rain forests and adventure trails through the jungle. But for couples on a budget, Puerto Rico offers its own rain forests, pristine beaches and old-world charm. It also has world-class surfing, zip lines and canopy tours for the more adventurous set.
The biggest selling point is that it's easier, and cheaper, to get to with round-trip flights that cost about 30% less right now.
"Considering all that the island has to offer, it's a surprise that this destination hasn't become more popular among newlyweds," noted L. Jasmine Kim, general manager of Travel-Ticker.com.
While it's still off the radar, sun seekers should take advantage of the low prices and abundant deals here. Kim's pick: the beachfront Gran Melia Puerto Rico Golf Resort & Villas, where packages -- including airfare and a three-night stay -- start at $419 per person with a $150 resort credit.
