In the increasingly mobbed tech space, every website and mobile app creator is desperate for a visual edge that can help it cut through the clutter. Path -- a smaller, more private social network started by early Facebook employee Dave Morin -- is renown for its design team.
When the first version of Path didn't take off, Path's creators launched a redesign dubbed "Path 2.0," which immediately garnered praise. Users described the new redesign as "gorgeous," and the company saw a rapid increase in downloads of its mobile app.
Morin left Facebook on good terms; rejoining the company would be a homecoming for him. And design teams are one of Facebook's favorite thing to buy: In the last few months it snapped up Dutch software design firm Sofa, location-sharing site Gowalla (bought for its designers, who were put to work on Facebook's Timeline), and Push Pop Press, a digital publishing company founded by former Apple interface designer Mike Matas.
