Americans are working fewer hours, partly due to the rise in part-time jobs. These people want full-time work, but can only find part-time gigs.
I've been working part time since 2008, and I've been looking for full time since 2009.
I am a medical assistant and phlebotomist by trade. When my father died in 2007, I needed a break from it. I was his healthcare liaison when he got sick, and after his death, my heart wasn't in it anymore. I went back to school to pursue a career in radio journalism (it was a lifelong dream, I had to give it a try), but it never panned out.
I've been trying since 2010 to get back into medical assisting or phlebotomy, but I believe my absence from the field has hurt me. I still look for work in my field, but I am currently working for a local grocery store chain in their deli department, making less than $10 an hour. I look in my local paper, check employment websites and local hospitals' sites, and I have a résumé at Monster.
I want more than anything to work full time again. I am 41 years old and I want to feel like a productive member of society.
