John Roberts drove work crews from company-provided housing -- known as man camps -- to the drill sites. He was also laid off earlier this month. He lost his housing and is now sleeping on a friend's couch. All his belongings are in his car.

'"I need a job right now, as we speak," said Roberts, interviewed while searching for work at Williston's employment center. "I'm hoping people will find me fit and qualified."
