Breaking up is hard to do - at least for Marathon Oil. In a bid to lift its sagging stock, Marathon said last summer it would separate into two public companies, one for oil exploration and one for refining. Then the stock market imploded and Marathon wisely backed off.

Now, Marathon is battling weak oil prices, and spending loads of cash on a refinery in Garyville, La. Investors don't care much these days about the refinery business - they favor the cash flow of oil production. But the Garyville project will help Marathon meet growing demand for diesel fuel and net it some valuable tax breaks. - M.C.
