In 2008, for the first time ever, sales of Kroger's "Private Selections" topped $1 billion. The grocery chain's in-house brand of food includes everything from angus beefsteaks to bread, and all told, Kroger's own brands now account for nearly a fifth of the company's sales.

It's a trend that's about more than bragging rights: Prices are lower for in-house brands, which attracts shoppers, and sales of them mean higher profit margins for Kroger. Such sales helped Kroger fare better than traditional supermarkets last year, and fend off competition from discount stores like Wal-Mart. - M.C.
