Describing the Franco-Belgian bank's year, CEO Pierre Mariani said the events of 2008 proved "the structural fragility" of the company, likely nodding to the bank's foray into the U.S. subprime market. The result: The need for a $9 billion injection from the governments of France, Belgium, and Luxembourg to avoid a collapse.

Mariani said the bank's getting back on track, and there's proof Dexia is returning to its core values: During the first quarter of 2009, Dexia reported higher than expected profits of $342 million.
