After a stellar start to last year -- profits for BP's first and second quarters combined for an impressive $17 billion -- the London-based oil company was hit hard, like others in the industry, by tumbling oil prices, causing a fourth quarter loss of $3.3 billion. But BP forged ahead, unveiling a new platform called Thunder Horse in the Gulf of Mexico that cranked out 200,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day, helping the company earn the title of largest producer in the Gulf. As CEO Tony Hayward declared in the annual report, "BP is back."
