Almost every room has a view at the Blair Hill Inn, perched high up on Moosehead Lake and designed to capture the landscape. Everywhere you look, you'll see the changing leaves contrasted with Maine's evergreens. Elegantly decorated rooms that aren't stuffy or fussy. A 90-foot long veranda with fabulous view of the lake. Set on 15 tree-filled acres with lots of pathways and a pond. Rooms range from $275-$395 per night. (207)695-0224
Where to Eat: In the Blair Hill Inn dining room. Only breakfast is served on weekdays, but on Friday and Saturday evenings, for just $50, guests can linger over a five-course menu that is never the same. One thing that you can count on: a main course that is wood grilled. For a more rustic dining experience, drive north to the West Branch Pond Camps, located in Maine's Unorganized Territories. There are no menu choices - you'll be served whatever they feel like making. But the food is homespun and delicious. Best of all, it's announced with an old-fashioned dinner bell. (207)695-2561
Attractions: Take a shuttle boat out to Mt. Kineo for a hike that will take up half of a day. Go on a moose safari. Or hire a guide to take you canoeing on the lake.
Leafspotting: Book a tour on the Katahdin, a historic steamboat that ferries passengers around Moosehead. Depending on the length of the cruise, prices range from $30 to $45. (207)695-2716
