27. Barbara Stymiest
Chief Operating Officer, Royal Bank of Canada
2005 rank: 34
Stymiest, 50, an accountant by training, has guided the Royal Bank of Canada through seven straight quarters of profit. The No. 2 executive at Canada's No. 1 bank is an advocate for offering insurance through bank branches, something the government hasn't allowed. In the meantime she is focusing on strengthening the bank's presence in the U.S. and expanding even further afield. Revenues last year grew 26%, to $24.1 billion, with 60% coming from outside Canada.
