Sculley, McCaw back startup Tello
Plus: Google's text ads in the newspaper, Bill Gates fails to solve spam, and AMD vs. Intel.
SAN FRANCISCO (Business 2.0) - Former Apple CEO John Sculley, Nextel and AT&T Wireless founder Craig McCaw, VOIP pioneer Jeff Pulver, and telecom banker Michael Price are backing a startup, Tello, which plans to merge instant messaging, VOIP, and cellphones. Google buying, selling newspaper ads Google's text ads are becoming ubiquitous on the Web -- and now you're going to see them in the newspaper, too. The Chicago Sun-Times is selling remnant space to Google, which fills it with printed versions of its Web ads. One thing the blogs haven't noted: While the print ads obviously aren't clickable (which is how Google gets paid for Web ads), the spots feature a toll-free 800 number. Could this really be an experiment in expanding Google's business into pay-per-call advertising? Bill Gates fails to solve spam Two years ago, Microsoft's chairman predicted that the problem of spam would be "solved." Company representatives claim that for Microsoft Hotmail, Bill Gates' prediction has come true, but researchers beg to differ: Almost a third of e-mail in consumers' inboxes is still spam. AMD to Intel: You got servered! TG Daily interviews AMD executive Randy Allen, who oversees the company's server-chips division. While researchers have yet to release official market-share numbers, the company's financial reports suggest that AMD's gain in server chips contributed to Intel's disappointing results. ---------------------------------------------------- Google tops Apple in brand poll.
