Preparing for the unthinkable Be ready for any crisis. NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Looking back to the tragedy of September 11th, there were many things we wish we could have been prepared for. It's always a smart idea to be ready for any crisis. We're going to help you make your own preparation checklist in today's top tips. 1: Gather your supplies In case of an emergency, you'll want to have some supplies tucked away in your home. The Department of Homeland Security recommends you have a gallon of water per person per day in your home. Make sure you have a three-day supply of non-perishable food and a can opener. It's also smart to have a battery powered radio and some local maps on hand too. It's also a good idea to have a dust mask that will help to filter air that may be contaminated. 2: Get an emergency kit Prepare a go-bag in case you need to leave your home in a hurry. This kit should include an extra set of car keys, some spare cash, a first aid kit and all of your medical information. Include your medicines and don't forget an extra set of eyeglasses or contact lenses. Remember to note the style and serial number of medical devices like pacemakers. 3: Know the plan Put together an emergency communications plan for your family. Make a wallet-sized contact card with all of your family's information. Set up an out-of-town contact in case it's difficult to get through on local land lines. Keep contact info for fire and police posted near the phone. You should also establish a meeting location. If you have pets, call your vet or an animal shelter for advice on where your pet can go in case you have to be evacuated. Your local Red Cross chapter should have a list of possible evacuation routes in your area. Check out disaster plans at school, daycare, work, and places where you and your family spend time in the community. _______________________________ Gerri's Mailbox: Got questions about your money?
