Stocks take a dive

U.S. markets open sharply lower amid global, economic concerns.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- U.S. stocks tumbled at the start of trading Thursday as concerns about overseas markets and the economy haunted investors.

The Dow Jones industrial average skidded 177 points, or 1.4 percent, having been down as much as 209 points. The Nasdaq composite index tumbled 2 percent. The Standard & Poor's 500 index was 1.6 percent lower.
