The new Ford Mondeo might be THE story of the 2007 Geneva Auto Show. A bold statement, perhaps? Or more importantly, just the sort of "Bold Move" Ford's European arm is able to make well and often. Their U.S. cousins must be jealous.
The 2007 Mondeo is not a revolutionary vehicle, mind you. But when considered in the context of Ford North America, it is difficult to believe there's a blue oval on its grill. It is a compelling and contemporary design that collected Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Volvo comparisons at this evening's critical pre-press event. Following are other traits called out tonight...
"Possible to mention in the same breath as the "new" Taurus presented in Chicago last month?"
"Limousine-like comfort., soft touch and high-quality materials all around, acclaimed driving dynamics, adaptive cruise control , twin-screen LCD driver/passenger information systems."
"Cohesive, aggressive, and most importantly, interesting style elements inside and out."
These words, used to describe the new Euro Mondeo, are exactly the type all new U.S. Fords will need to earn before they can climb back onto the common consumer's consideration list.
There has been a lot of bad news out of Dearborn lately, but great product has an uncanny way of changing perspectives and saving fortunes. Bold Moves? I just experienced yet another one here in Geneva, but the clock is ticking in Michigan. I met with the Product Manager for the Mondeo this evening and when I mentioned the word "Taurus", he quickly slinked away.
Can this really be the same company?
