Fortune sent Photographer Paolo Pellegrin to tag along with Bill Gates on a 4-day visit in April, during which the Microsoft chairman was celebrated -- and had reason to celebrate.

Gates spoke passionately to students (here at Tsinghua University) as he tried to demonstrate Microsoft's desire to succeed in China and to help the country develop its own software industry.
