These days carrying a Gucci bag doesn't mean you're unique -- or even special. As luxury has gone mass market, retailers are getting creative and ginning up one-of-a-kind items that recapture exclusivity.

When Cartier relaunched its less expensive "Love" collection in 2006, the signature gold jewelry garnered mass appeal - and put the premium jeweler on the map with the aspirational mainstream. But Cartier hasn't abandoned its roots: This summer the company also extended its brand on the high end with its newest collection, Ballon Bleu.

The line includes a few one-off pieces such as this diamond-encrusted timepiece set in 18-karat white gold. All told, there are 759 diamonds, totaling 42.7 carats, and one 2.4-carat sapphire on the crown that's hard to miss. Tracking it down is more difficult: The watch is currently traveling among Cartier boutiques around the globe and is slated to hit the U.S. later this fall.
