Having had cardiac troubles since his 30s, Bogle underwent a heart transplant in 1996. So Bogle could focus on his health issues, John Brennan was named as his replacement. Bogle recovered and remained on the board as senior chairman. He later told the Los Angeles Times that the experience was "almost mystical" and said he was doing well -- playing squash and climbing mountains.
